Uganda Law Society Launches New Innovative Legal Aid & Pro Bono App – Uber for Lawyers

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has launched a new innovative Legal Aid & Pro Bono App called ‘PULIDAWO’. This App will provide on line legal services to indigent, vulnerable and marginalized people in Uganda within their localities by the simple click of a button.

‘PULIDAWO’ a local dialect for ‘Your Lawyer’ was developed by the Uganda Law Society (ULS) with support from UN Women following the realization that conventional legal aid and pro bono service provision cannot on its own effectively address the ever growing barriers to access to justice especially for the rural poor.

ULS is mapping lawyers across the country by encouraging them to register their profiles on the App. The App which can be downloaded from Google Play Store operates as an ‘Uber’ for lawyers anywhere in Uganda. It facilitates instant, accessible and affordable interaction between indigent, vulnerable and marginalized clients seeking justice and qualified advocates. The App will eliminate access to justice barriers such as physical distance and quack lawyers that frustrate access to justice. It also avails 24-hour information on the justice system such as court processes and procedures, in a bid to raise awareness on the law.

Speaking on behalf of the DGF at the Uganda Law Society 9th Annual Regional Pro Bono Day, which also doubled as the official launch of the PULIDAWO App, the Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Uganda, H.E. Attilio Pacifici noted that the provision of pro bono legal services has played a fundamental role in promoting access to justice in Uganda. He reiterated DGF’s commitment to a continued partnership with the Uganda Law Society, legal aid service providers and all lawyers to advocate for the enactment of the proposed Legal Aid Bill and the fast-tracking of the draft National Legal Aid Policy, which will impose an obligation on the Government of Uganda to provide state funded legal aid services to Ugandans.

The PULIDAWO App, which can be used by people in both rural and urban areas was officially launched by the Deputy Speaker, Parliament of Uganda, Hon Jacob Oulanyah at the 9th Annual Uganda Law Society Regional Pro Bono day on 28th June 2019 under the theme, “Pro Bono Legal Practice: Professionalism, Sustainability and Accessibility”. He congratulated the Uganda Law Society for continuing to innovate and shrink the ‘access’ barriers in the pursuit of justice, especially by poor, vulnerable and marginalized people across the country.
